Re-Imagining Your Vision Statement

Your vision is a shared belief about the future of your organization and what you are trying to achieve. It should be a well-articulated set of words that clearly and concisely describes your vision to all the world. It is also the north star that will guide the staff and volunteers as they make daily operational decisions. It should be:

  1. Audacious – a dream that’s beyond what you think is possible
  2. Aligned with Core Competencies
  3. Descriptive, short and memorable.

Here are two great vision statements. Can you guess which organizations use these?

“to provide access to the world’s information in one click.”

” a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

If you guessed Google and Habitat for Humanity, give yourself a gold star.

Now, sit down with a few board and staff members and wordsmith a vision statement that will energize and clarify where you want to go and achieve. Research vision statements of other organizations in your sector and gather descriptive words that speaks to your vision. Don’t hesitate to use a thesaurus to refine the message. When the small group is satisfied with the vision statement, share it with the board and get their revisions and final approval. Good Luck!
